Understanding the emergency-supply checklist.
This checklist sums up how much emergency supply you need and how to build it up. The recommendations follow the guidelines of the Federal Office for National Economic Supply (BWL) — at least 30 days of food and drinking-water supply per household, plus the necessary energy and hygiene reserve. The focus areas are water, food, energy and the basic equipment for your household.
01 Food — how many calories per day?
Estimate your daily needs realistically
To survive, 1’000 kcal per day and person are enough. For our emergency-supply packages we calculate conservatively with 1’300 kcal per day — actual consumption depends heavily on physical exertion. Heavy work can push the need up to 3’000 kcal or more. Concretely: for a 2-person household over 30 days, plan for around 78’000 kcal of dry food.
Our emergency-supply packages
We offer various packages — from the Notvorrat Classic for one person and one month, to the Familien-Angebot Classic for four months, up to the Notvorrat EXTRA for a whole year. Special requirements such as gluten-free or lactose-free are also covered; a vegan line is available too. Supplementary packages such as the muesli, bread or carbohydrate package can be combined freely.
All-in-one solutions
If you prefer something compact, go for an all-in-one solution — BASIS, GOURMET, LUXUS, EXKLUSIV or MAXIMA — bundling food and the matching equipment. The calorie calculator in the online shop shows you live how much supply you currently have in your basket.
02 Water — supply plus filter
Drinking-water supply as a minimum reserve
In an emergency, drinking water is the most critical resource — a person survives only three days without it. The BWL minimum recommendation is 9 litres per person as an immediately available supply. For longer periods, there’s no way around a water filter for treatment.
Filters in our range
- Micropur — chemical preservation, the classic for drinking-water reserves in a canister. Simple, long-lasting, suitable for prepared water.
- MSR water purifier — UV-based, battery-powered, fast and reliable in an acute situation. Ideal for on the go and in your travel luggage.
- Katadyn water filter — mechanical filters from the pocket model to the drip solution for whole households. A robust storage solution with a long service life.
Which one is right depends on the water source and the number of people. In the advisory tool or over the phone, we’ll help you choose the right model.
03 Energy — emergency stoves & fuels
An off-grid way to cook
At least one off-grid way to cook belongs in every emergency supply — a food reserve is of little use if you can’t prepare it. Emergency stoves come with quite different fuels: gas, petrol, diesel, white gas, petroleum or wood. The choice depends on what you can store safely and how long you want to be self-sufficient.
Lighting and fire
For lighting we recommend petroleum lamps — hours of burn time per filling, robust, off-grid. A storm kettle provides fire even in wind and wet weather. Cast-iron fire pots are stackable, wood-fired and let you cook without any electricity or gas supply.
Plan for fuel
Plan in fuel for the entire period you want — for a 30-day supply that means, depending on the stove, 5–15 kg of fuel per person. In the advisor we work this out for your specific situation.
